Things to do in Vardenis

Vardenis is a small town in the Gegharkunik region lying at 2,006 metres above the sea level, near the Lake Sevan. There are two monasteries, Makenyats and Vanevan Monastery, in a short distance from the city.

Vardenis is an end point of Janapar Trail but you can also start your hike here. The entire Janapar Trail is 284 km long, starts in Hadrut in Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh Republic) and continues to the cities of Sushi, Stepanakert, Karvachar and Vardenis. Much of the trail is green and forested, it passes by monasteries and fortresses along its route. The trail is marked and involves 8-16 days of hiking. Hikers would end each days hike in a village or a town where they could stay in local homestays without needing to bring camping gear.

Thanks to the volunteers from The Janapar Trail Project the hiking trail has been marked. You can also find accommodation at one of the selected homestays and experience first hand hospitality and local culture.

How to get to Vardenis

Vardenis bus services depart and arrive at Kilikia Bus Station in Yerevan. Take minibus no. 311 or 312 at Kilikia. You will arrive in Vardenis in 3 hours and 30 minutes. Bus ticket costs 1,500 AMD, approximately 3 EUR. Please, have your fare ready at exact change in order to make cash handling easy.
