What to do in Stepanakert

Stepanakert is the capital of Artsakh, also known as Nagorno-Karabakh Republic. International community never recognised Artsakh as an independent country. Despite the fact that there is a long-lasting territorial conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan over Artsakh, city of Stepanakert and it's region is very safe. The only way how to travel to Stepanakert on land is from Armenia.

Stepanakert is most well-known for the We Are Our Mountains monument, a symbol of the Armenian heritage of Artsakh, depicting a faces of a man and a woman. The statue is also called Tatik-Papik (Grandma-Grandpa). You should also visit Artsakh State History Museum, National Gallery and Museum to the Memory of Perished Azatamartiks dedicated to those who died during Karabakh conflict.

When you visit Stepanakert, make sure that you try some Jingyalov hats, which is bread filled with greens and herbs, including cilantro, parsley, and spinach. This is the national food of Artsakh, so you get the completely authentic and homemade version in Stepanakert.
