Things to do in Armavir

Armavir was one of the capitals of ancient Armenia, which was founded by the Armenian King Argishti around the 8th century BC. It was renamed Hoktemberyan during the Soviet Union in honor of the October Revolution of 1917 (‘Hoktember’ is Armenian for ‘October’). The city is just few kilometers away from Metsamor nuclear power plant, which is the only in the South Caucasus.

Because of the ancient history of the region, you can visit old settlement Armavir located 7 km south of Armavir (near Haykavan village) and Argishtikhinili fortification located 15 kilometres southwest of Armavir (near Jrashen village). There are ruins of fortresses and palaces in both of these archeological sites.

The most popular tourist sites nearby is Sardarapat memorial, military Pantheon for soldiers who died during the Artsakh War and State Ethnographic Museum located only 10 km southwest of Armavir. Sardarapat is the site of a famous battle that took place in 1918 that cemented Armenia’s independence. The memorial is opened 24/7, the museum is opened every day except of Mondays. 

Yerevan to Armavir by bus and train

Take minibus or bus from the Kilikia Bus Station in Yerevan. Buses no. 206 and 207 leave the station in 10 minutes interval and you will reach Armavir within an hour. A single trip from Yerevan to Armavir costs 350 AMD, which is a little less than 75 euro cents. There are also four daily trains between Armavir and Yerevan, in order to catch the train you need to go to Central Railway Station.
